Glass Colors and Types

For our Bent Panel or Slumped Glass lamp shades, we prefer to use the Spectrum Glass Company Inc; manufacturers of specialty sheet glass for lighting, architecture, and the stained glass arts. Glass sheets are available in a wide variety of colors and can be of opaque, iridescent, wispy, or clear type. The glass type you choose will determine the character of your lamp shade.

Note regarding color accuracy: While every effort has been made to present these color images on our website as accurately as possible, photographed material doesn't always capture the true color of glass. Please call us for a better description of the color you considering for your lamp shade.

Opaque/Opalescent Glass

Opaques are about 50-50 cathedral color and white opal glass. The larger proportion of white opal  increases surface reflection and reduces light transmission. We do not recommend choosing dark colors for this type of glass.

  Iridescent/Pearlized
At temperatures upwards of 1000 degrees, a micro-thin layer of metallic crystal is flash-fired onto the glass surface, producing a radiant, jewel-like color across the sheet. Iridescent glass creates a vintage Mother of Pearl finish, an art glass favorite since the turn of the century.

Wispy/Semi-Transparent
Wispy glass is composed of about 3/4 cathedral glass color and about 1/4 opal white glass. The white opal is hand-ladled into a moving stream of cathedral color. The two glasses are then stirred together by hand just before the sheet is formed. The combination of wisps of opal and clear cathedral color creates a semi-transparent marbling in the finished sheet.

Waterglass/Transparent
Waterglass has a natural surface texture created by stretching the hot glass sheet while it is still in a pliable state. This results in gentle, rolling waves that resemble the surface of a lake or stream. Its distinguishing characteristics are 100% pure cathedral color and total transparency. Waterglass can also be iridized.
